A civil rights group, Conscience of Delta, (CD) has berated the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for retaining one Mr Sunday Okoro, allegedly standing trial for multiple murder, arson and kidnapping as his Special Assistant on Security Matters.
A crack police team from Force Headquarters Abuja, on Wednesday, September 10, 202 had arrested Mr Sunday Okoro Ukwejemifor (AKA G1), leader of the dreaded White Ladder Cult group.
It was alleged that the said Mr. Okoro had been terrorising Sapele and its environs over an alleged assassination attempt on Mr Sunny Nwakego.
Mr Okoro, who has been on security watchlist since 2009 as a result of his alleged involvement in kidnapping, arson, unresolved murder and armed robbery among others, was arrested along with six others; Ayomanor Tobore, Romeo Okoro, Precious Oghaje, Blessing Isaba, Eseoghene Ogheneovo and Iwarri Mosco.
While some of these suspects have been granted bail after the police investigation, Mr Okoro was charged to court to face his multiple charges both at the FCT High Court and High Court in Nassarawa State and has since be reminded in a correctional centre in Abuja awaiting trial yet remained an aide to Governor Okowa.
Decrying this development which CD said has continued to the paint lthe group in bad light, charged the governor to terminate the appointment of Mr Okoro, anas indication the state government is not backing him as being speculated in some quarters, since the said G1.
The group in a statement signed by its President, Comrade Odafe James and Abeke Prince said: “We noted with sadness the continue retaining of a dreaded criminal who has over 4 murder unresolved cases handing on his neck as an AS, on Security Matters to our State Governor.
“In the last count, over five families, including a Sapele businessman, one Sunny Nwakaego, petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) leading to his arrest and arraignment for alleged kidnapping, murder, arson and assassination.
“Moreover, there has been attempts and act of terrorism on one Engr. Jude and the alleged murder of Lucky Oghenebrorie Tetebe, Tikaraye Akpojevughe Miller and Ikpen Famous Okuma.
In a petition dated 9th October 2020 addressed to the Inspector General of Police, by Mr Ovwigho Efejotor, he alleged that Sunday Okoro AKA GI, Ochuko Gabriel Omofeye, Kenneth Omare and one other allegedly murdered Mr Famus Okuma Ekpen.
In another petition addressed to the IGP dated 25th October 2020 by Mr Newworld Akpojevughe over alleged threat to life, abduction and murder of his younger brother, Tikaraye Miller Akpojevughe by Sunday Okoro (Alias GI), a leader of a deadly cult group, White ladder on August 24, 2009, at about 4:30 pm at their family compound near Okpe Grammar School, Sapele and since his abduction, he has not been seen.
The petition added they have come to a painful conclusion that “Sunday Okoro (Alias GI), who abducted him on the said date might have murdered and hid his corpse”, as the petitioner urged the IGP to bring the killer of his younger brother to book.
Also, in another petition to the IGP dated October 9, 2020, by the mother of Lucky Oghenebrorie Tetebe, Mrs Elizabeth Ighome, she alleged Sunday Okoro AKA GI, Ochuko Gabriel Omofeye and his cohorts on May 5, 2009, burnt down their house, and when the case was reported to the police authorities in Delta, they failed to arrest the suspect.
She further alleged in her petition that on October 17, 2019, Sunday Okoro AKA GI, Ochuko Gabriel Omofeye and his cohorts allegedly killed her son, Lucky Oghenebrorie Tetebe, at New Road Junction, by Total Filling Station, noting that all efforts to bring the said Okoro to justice has met brickwall because he was shielded by powerful politicians in the State.
“So, we are calling on our amiable Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa to as a matter of urgency, to sack Mr Sunday Okoro and thereafter, disassociate the state government from him which has served as a shield for him to evade prosecution in the past and allow the law to take its course.
“The lives of the people of Sapele matters. If the killings going on must be checked, the political class and the leadership of PDP in Sapele must stop shielding known criminals amongst them for political gains.”
The group also described the recent petition purportedly written by one Mrs Rose Okoro to the Attorney General of the Federation, (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN) and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, alleging that her husband was unlawfully detained by the police a laughable, and therefore be disregarded.
CD noted that the petition was not only baseless but an attempt to frustrate the effort of security operatives in carrying out their lawful duty and the law court from dispensing justice for the oppressed.
“It’s also not true that Mr Okoro is unlawfully detained by the police, because the last time we check, he is being remanded in a correctional centre, awaiting his day in court”, the rights group added.
